Leaking Refrigerant on AC

What allows the AC to cool your room is the refrigerant. The unit blows around room temperature air if it doesn’t have enough refrigerant. You do not need to add more refrigerant unless it leaks out. Make sure the unit is adequately charged and all you need is the proper maintenance to keep it running efficiently. If the unit has a leak, something is not working properly.

How do you know if your refrigerant is low?

If your unit expels warm or hot air, it does mean that the refrigerant level in AC is very low. If you notice the ice forming on evaporator coils, the coil is getting too cold. This is because of condensation freezing onto the coil. If you hear any unusual noises from the unit, it indicates the leakage.

If your electricity bill is higher or if the room is taking too much time to cool then you can confirm that your AC has low refrigerant. While this happens short cycling occurs which puts more stress on the unit and result in many issues.

How refrigerant leaks happen

There are multiple reasons for the leakage to occur and the most common ones are:

– The metal components of the system happen to erode overtime from formic acid, which burns the small holes in the system. Normally, you can rectify the issue by replacing the affected parts or if the damage is higher it is good to replace the system.

– The vibrations in the unit cause the refrigerant to leak.

– If your unit is old, it can leak because the refrigerant is circulated at high pressures. This can result in a thinning in the lines over time.

– Refrigerant leaks can be occurred due to factory defects

Finally, if you recently installed a new AC, unfitting installation can result in leaking refrigerant.

The refrigerant is leaking in your AC

When refrigerant is leaking, the AC must work harder to maintain the same temperatures. Temporarily you can fix this issue by adding more refrigerant, but the problem stays there. One good option is to find and repair the leak. By repairing you are saving your money in the long term. You will avoid the regular cost of recharging your AC and repairing overall damage.
